Who decides when a body is "okay"?
"Not OK" examines the female-marked body as a site of societal expectations, memories, and ingrained self-control. Its starting point is experiences between Korea and Germany: notions of beauty and conformity, familial and social role models, public gazes, language, and violence are inscribed on bodies – often long before they can be consciously named.
Two performers move through routines of checking, adjusting, and repeating. They dress and undress, observe and monitor each other, wear masks, speak, remain silent, and sing. Movements from Korean dance meet contemporary performance and physical theatre. Live music, text, and camera expand the stage space.
The camera is not merely a technical tool. It becomes the gaze itself: it magnifies, tracks, frames, and decides what becomes visible. A tension arises between the real body and its projected image, a space of tension between self-perception and external perception.
The production is based on artistic research in Germany and South Korea. Interviews, observations of public space, and historical and contemporary images of femininity form the material for the work. The aim is not to tell a linear story. Rather, the past appears as a physical habit, as tension, gesture, or statement that continues into the present.
Not OK asks how societal norms continue to live on in the body – and what happens when that body begins to resist them.
