Moonjoo Kim

Moonjoo Kim is a dancer and performer based in Germany. Her artistic practice moves between Korean dance, contemporary performance, movement analysis, and movement notation.

​

She studied Korean Dance at the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Dance Performance in 2020. Her close observation of traditional movement forms and their subtle physical structures later led her to movement analysis and notation.

​

In 2024, she completed her Master’s degree in Movement Notation and Analysis at Folkwang University of the Arts.

In her artistic work, Moonjoo explores how memory, perception, and inner states can become visible through movement. She is particularly interested in subtle physical changes – in breath, rhythm, tension, repetition, and the fine transitions between movement and stillness.

She combines her background in Korean dance with contemporary performance and analytical approaches to movement. Alongside dance, she also uses notation and drawing as ways of observing, recording, and translating movement into new forms.

As a dancer and performer, she works in independent productions across North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond. Her collaborations include productions with Tanzfuchs Produktionen as well as performative and interdisciplinary projects at various theatres and art institutions.

In 2023, she co-founded MÜN Kollektiv with Minju Kim. Within the collective, she contributes her particular perspective on movement, Korean dance practice, and movement analysis to their shared artistic research.

In 2026, she is co-director and performer of Nicht in Ordnung – Der weiblich markierte Körper. The production brings movement principles from Korean dance traditions into dialogue with contemporary performance and asks how social experiences and memories continue to live in the body.

​

Her artistic practice does not seek a direct or fixed translation of tradition. Instead, she explores how movement can be transmitted, transformed, and re-read across different times, contexts, and bodies.
